I was delighted when Caterpillar Books asked me if I would write a picture book for them. As a storyteller, I often work with very small children, and I really wanted a story book I could share with them. By Lantern Light is perfect, because little ones love pressing the lantern to make it light up!
The story is set in a wood on a windy night. Two rabbits are heading home. Daddy has brought an old lantern with him. His son Robbie is embarrassed and protests. Why doesn't his dad buy a shiny new one? But his dad has faith in the old lantern. It will get them safely home.

And so their journey by lantern light begins. Along the way, they help various animals who are struggling in the dark: an otter who has lost his fishing rod, a group of mice who want to dance at a party, two baby hedgehogs who need seeing home, and a tiny owl that has fallen from its nest. The warm golden glow of the lantern helps everyone! |
By Lantern Light has been translated into many languages, including Portuguese, Greek, German, Finnish and Georgian. The light goes on and off, but it will never run out. On the back there is a tiny little door, and behind the door there is a tiny battery - just like the one you would find in a watch. |
