Jack's Diamond is a collection of eight magical short stories. You'll meet fearless Freya, who goes hunting a boy-eating troll. Tom finds something alive in the marmalade jar. Naughty Miranda receives an unexpected present with wings ~ and more! The stories have been illustrated by the wonderful Graham Higgins, who has also illustrated Terry Pratchett books. My favourite illustration comes from a story called The King's Stolen Treasure ~ |
' That night, the King and Snapple hid themselves in the tower. No one knew they were there - not even the Queen, and she generally knew everything. The King was excited to begin with, like a boy before his birthday. But it was cold, and nothing happened for the longest time. They heard the bell in the stable yard strike midnight. One o'clock. Two o'clock. Still nothing happened. The King wrapped his blanket tighter around himself, till only his nose could be seen.
'Hot chocolate,' he mumbled. 'That's what I should be having now. With marshmallows and cream and...'
'Shhhh, your Majesty. Look!'
The King looked up. There was a tiny golden light, floating down from the top of the tower...'
Jack's Diamond is a perfect book for bedtime. It's great for sharing. There are ghostly pirates, dragons, a troll, a monster pudding - and a poem about what would happen if the world turned to chocolate!
I've written the stories especially for
younger children, aged 5 - 8.
