People often ask me where I get the ideas for my stories. With Zac, I remember the EXACT moment it happened...
I was in a school, doing an assembly, but I was feeling very tired. And when I am tired, I sometimes get words wrong. When it came to the Questions & Answers bit, a boy asked me if I had written any horror books. ‘No,’ I told him, ‘I’ve never done any books about ghosts, vampires or zombeards. Huh? What did I just say?! Zombies. I mean zombies.’ Everyone had laughed though, and now they wanted to know. ‘Miss, what’s a zombeard?’ |
I gave the answer without needing to think. ‘It’s a zombie with a beard. It also has a brain, which makes it a lot more dangerous.’
That is how the idea was born. Now, two years later, here is the book.
Zac is eleven years old and, while his friends are playing video games and dressing up as monsters for Halloween, he is fighting zombies for real. He discovers his creaky old Grampy is a Paranormal Peacekeeper - his job is keeping the ghosts in the local churchyards in order. But now, three zombeards have come to town in search of a girl buried in one of the churchyards. Someone will have to stop them - and it won’t be Grampy.
It’s a fast read and probably my scariest book. If you don’t like the idea of being chased at night by a zombie - don’t read it at bedtime!!
