Jaco the Leek is my funniest book. A teacher once told me he had read it to his class, and he'd been really worried that someone was going to wet themselves - they were laughing so hard!

I wrote Jaco because...
  • I wanted to do a book that was fast and funny and easier to read than my other books.
  • I wanted a book set in Wales, because that was where I was living at the time, and I was working mostly in Welsh schools.
  • I wanted a book with illustrations! Jaco has some great ones.

The story is set on St David's Day: March 1st. In Wales, St David's Day is very special. The children often dress up for school, either in traditional Welsh costume or in rugby shirts. Some children dress as miners or daffodils. Anything that celebrates Wales! The book is about a boy called Jaco, who decides he is tired of dressing up for St David's Day. This year he wants something different. So he makes a wish  at bedtime and it comes true. Next morning,  he finds he has turned into a leek!

My favourite bits in Jaco the Leek

My favourite character:  The terrifying Mrs Stephens!

My favourite bit: Chapter 2, when Cai fetches Mam...

Jaco is determined to go to school. There's an important football match that day, and he's in the team. With his brother's help, he manages to get his pants on - that's a start! But will the coach let him play? Will he even get to the match, when Cook needs leeks for her famous Leek Soup?
